LATINO COMMUNITY ADVOCACY PROGRAM (LCAP)
The Latino Community Advocacy Program (LCAP) addresses the special needs of the Spanish speaking immigrant population in Saratoga County. Our activities also promote cultural understanding and recognize the positive contributions of immigrants and long tradition of immigration in our communities. Our bilingual staff provides assistance by facilitating communication and access to health, legal, and educational services. The goal of our program is to extend EOC’s mission of promoting economic self-sufficiency to immigrants in our community. Our Services Include:
History The Latino Community Advocacy Program (LCAP) was created in 2005 through a Community Development Block Grant from the City of Saratoga Springs and a community service work study grant from Stanford University. English as a Second Language classes served as the cornerstone of the program and new service grew in response to a need, as students not only came to classes to learn English, but to seek help with a number of health, legal, and employment issues. Since it began, the program has run part-time year round and has provided language instruction, outreach, referral and advocacy services, and served as a cultural and community hub for hundreds of Latino immigrants in the Saratoga Springs area. In two years, English classes have doubled in size with now approximately 110 students enrolled during 2007 and our list of services poised to expand. In July of 2007 became a full time program with its first full-time coordinator. In October, the Latino Community Advocacy Program hosted the first Hispanic Heritage Celebration in Saratoga Springs. The program currently has a funding goal of $200,000 in order to expand services and establish an office where Spanish speaking community members can come and speak with bilingual staff.
